According to reports, Samsung is developing an ISOCELL camera sensor with a 450-megapixel resolution. The report follows the discovery of a Hexa2pixel trademark application by Samsung on KIPRIS in South Korea and TMView in Europe. Because the trademark does not specify the resolution or whether it is a camera sensor or not, this report should be treated with caution. The South Korean tech giant unveiled its 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP3 sensor with Tera2pixel technology last month. It was the successor to Samsung’s ISOCELL HP1 camera sensor.
Samsung has filed a trademark application for Hexa2pixel. The application has been spotted on TMView in Europe as well as in South Korea. According to Sammobile, this trademark could indicate that the company is developing a 450-megapixel sensor. The applications, however, do not specify whether this trademark is for a camera sensor or a sensor with 450-megapixel resolution. As a result, these details should be taken with a grain of salt.
In June of this year, Samsung unveiled its 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP3 image sensor with Super QPD autofocus and Tetra2pixel technology. The image sensor replaced the ISOCELL HP1 sensor from the company. It has pixels with a resolution of 0.56 microns (um). It has 200 million pixels and an optical resolution of 1/1.4. According to Samsung, this image sensor can capture 8K videos at 30 frames per second (fps) with minimal field of view loss.
The 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP3 image sensor will also go into mass production later this year, according to the South Korean company. The Tetra2pixel technology allows the image sensor to operate as a 50-megapixel sensor with 1.12-micron pixels or a 12.5-megapixel sensor with 2.24-micron pixels for better low-light performance.
Although Samsung has yet to use the 200-megapixel image sensor in a Galaxy smartphone, the ISOCELL HP3 sensor is expected to be used in the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra in 2023. Other smartphone manufacturers, including Motorola and Xiaomi, are planning to release new handsets with 200-megapixel camera sensors. The Motorola Frontier is said to have a slightly older 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP1 image sensor from Samsung.
